Indiana Handgun License Application Procedure

BEFORE BEGINNING THE INDIANA HANDGUN PERMIT APPLICATION PROCESS, YOUR HOME ADDRESS ON YOUR IN-DRIVER'S LICENSE OR STATE ID MUST MATCH THE ADDRESS YOU ARE USING ON YOUR INDIANA HANDGUN PERMIT APPLICATION.

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE SERVICE DISTRICT OF THE HOBART POLICE DEPARTMENT, YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY FOR LOCAL PERMIT PROCESSING INFORMATION.

REAPPLYING FOR A CURRENT INDIANA HANDGUN PERMIT MAY BE DONE NO MORE THAN 180 DAYS (6 MONTHS) BEFORE YOUR CURRENT PERMIT EXPIRES.

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2020 THE HANDGUN PERMIT PROCEDURE IS AS FOLLOWS:

STEP 1: Click here to Apply online and pay any fees associated with completing the Indiana Handgun Permit Application by the Indiana State Police (this link will prompt you to a new web page). At the end of the application process, you will be prompted to pay any application fees through niiic.

STEP 2: THE HOBART POLICE DEPARTMENT NO LONGER FINGERPRINTS APPLICANTS FOR GUN PERMITS. You must have your fingerprints completed and submitted electronically by IdentoGo to the Indiana State Police.

For fingerprinting, follow the Indiana State Police Handgun application process to IdentoGo. From the IdentoGo link, you will be able to view fingerprint locations, schedule an appointment, and pay any fees associated for fingerprints by IdentoGo.

If you experience trouble scheduling a fingerprint appointment for your firearms permit or have a complaint about the firearms permit fingerprint process, please call the Indiana Department of Administration at 1-877-472-6917.

THE ONLINE APPLICATION AND FINGERPRINTING MUST BE COMPLETED; AS WELL AS ANY FEES ASSOCIATED WITH THE PERMIT OR FINGERPRINTING MUST BE PAID BEFORE VISITING THE HOBART POLICE DEPARTMENT TO COMPLETE STEP 3.

PLEASE ALLOW 48 HOURS AFTER FINGERPRINTING IS COMPLETED TO VISIT THE HOBART POLICE DEPARTMENT TO ENSURE YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION REFLECTS THE INDIANA STATE POLICE HAVE RECEIVED YOUR ELECTRONIC FINGERPRINTS.

STEP 3: Visit the Hobart Police Department to complete your background check, pay any local fees, and for final submission of your Indiana Handgun Permit application to the Indiana State Police. No appointment is necessary and handgun permits are processed during these days and times:

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M.; FRIDAY & SATURDAY 8 A.M. - 2 P.M. (EXCEPT HOLIDAYS).

-The following items are needed when you visit the Hobart Police Department: 

-Your Indiana driver’s license or State ID with your current address which matches the address on your Indiana Handgun Permit Application.

-Your current Indiana Handgun Permit or Application number if you do not have a current or prior Indiana Handgun Permit. 

- Receipt for fingerprinting from IdentoGo 

- Payment for the Local Fee if applicable (EXACT cash, check or money order are the only forms of payment accepted).

ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ONLINE APPLICATION AND PAID ALL FEES ASSOCIATED WITH THE APPLICATION AND FINGERPRINT PROCESS, YOU HAVE 90 DAYS TO VISIT THE HOBART POLICE DEPARTMENT TO COMPLETE THE BACKGROUND CHECK AND APPLICATION PROCESS TO HAVE YOUR PERMIT SUBMITTED TO THE INDIANA STATE POLICE.

Special Notes

* A portion of the local fee is refundable if a license is not issued. The entire state fee is refundable if no license is issued.

** Fee exemption applies only to the initial license application. All duplicate licenses incur a fee of $20.00.
